From Mother Storm
Hello Parishioners - Hope you're staying safe and warm! This weather sent me trudging over to the church (very quiet here today) to look at our Hyatt Windows in the south transept, which contain the great hymn to creation in our Prayer Book, the Benedicite. Here's the panel praising the ice and snow. (Apologies - it seems to insist on appearing sideways.)
And then there's this from Psalm 148: "Praise him, lightning and hail, snow and clouds, praise him you stormy winds that obey him." Amen to that ... at least if you're looking out from the inside, as I hope all are.
This Sunday we'll be celebrating the Epiphany and the Baptism of Our Lord, both at the 10 am service. And it's a Youth Sunday, so expect to see our three kings in the opening processional. Below is the current news to start, followed by more information about what's going on this month and beyond. See you Sunday!
After Church This Sunday Healing service, Sunday school all ages, coffee hour, parent discussion "Parenting and Politics," Youth Choir (6th-12th grade), Boy Scouts (5-6 pm), Senior Youth Rectory Dinner (6-7:30 pm)
This Saturday Lecture on Milton at St. James The fall Scarsdale Adult School class on Milton's Paradise Lost is having a reunion and everyone is invited! We will be hosting Milton Scholar Peter Herman (not our Peter Herman), author of several books on Milton and friend of one of our participants. He has a short lecture prepared (starting at 11 am), followed by a delicious lunch with a roaring fire in the Parish Hall. Reply to this email if you'd like to attend. The more the merrier!
Parenting and Politics: An Informal Discussion This Sunday How much news do your children take in? Do you discuss politics at the dinner table? Are your political views different from your children's? How do you handle difficult topics at home? These are some of the questions we'll informally explore this Sunday after church in the Isom Room. Astrid will facilitate a ranging, friendly, and casual discussion. Parents of all ages and stages in life are encouraged to take part. We'll begin at 11:15.
Healing Service This Sunday
Our monthly healing service takes place this Sunday immediately after the 10 am service. We will meet in the chapel. Please note: the Samaritans' meeting has been moved to the 2nd Sunday of each month.
Cub Scouts Meeting This Sunday 5 pm The St. James Cub Scout Troop 1 meets on the first Sunday of the month, 5-6 pm. This group is open to all boys grades 1-5. Join us! For questions, contact Scoutmaster Andrew Wood at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Senior Youth Rectory Dinner This Sunday 6 pm All senior high youth and their friends are invited to our chili cook-off this Sunday evening at the rectory (behind the church). We also have a short Eucharist at the end of the dinner, so it counts for church, too!
Vestry Nominations Know of someone who might make a good vestry member? Please pass along names to our Junior Warden, Tracy McCarthy, or to Mother Storm by January 7. New vestry members will be voted in at our Annual Meeting on January 28.
