FAMILY MINISTRY
At St. James, we know that spiritual formation begins with our youngest members. Our programming is designed to connect with children of all ages and developmental abilities with the intention of connecting families to the Christian faith.
SUNDAY SCHOOL & RED DOOR EXPLORERS, PreK - 6th Grade
Kids through 4th grade meet between services (9:45-10:15 am on Sundays) to learn Bible stories. 5th and 6th graders meet monthly Sunday evenings for the “Red Door Explorers” program, where they’re introduced to the Episcopal tradition and begin to ask larger questions about their faith. “Red Door” refers to the red doors of Episcopal churches, which symbolize refuge for all who enter.
HOLY COMMUNION CLASSES
In the Episcopal tradition, children can begin receiving Communion as soon as they express desire for it. When they reach 2nd grade, they’re also invited to participate in a class to learn more about Communion. The class lasts five weeks and takes place each spring during Lent.
CONFIRMATION CLASSES
Confirmation is a reaffirmation of the vows made at our baptism, and typically takes place in 8th grade. We have a two-year confirmation program for both 7th and 8th grades. The grades meet together. Year A is devoted to learning the Bible--the arc of its narrative, the connection of Old Testament and New Testament, and key stories that shape our faith. Year B is devoted to learning about our church’s traditions, sacraments, and history. Confirmation classes take place Sundays 5:30-6:30 pm from fall to spring.
JUNIOR AND SENIOR YOUTH GROUPS
6-8th grades and 9-12th meet for dinner and fellowship in their respective youth groups on the first Sunday of every month. See more detail on the website at the Children & Families tab.
FAMILY NIGHTS
Families gather periodically throughout the year, usually Friday nights, for dinner, fun, and games. All ages and generations are welcome to family nights.
