Weekly News from St. James the Less

An Important Security Reminder

A Note from Mother Storm

A friendly reminder to be suspicious of communications from me that are asking for something. Always check the email address (if it isn't "rector@stjamesscarsdale.org" don't reply). Know that I will never make vague requests for prayer, a meeting, or gift cards. Westchester clergy from wealthier communities often get phished, where made up email accounts are used to send out fake communications. Don't reply to these, and if in any doubt, contact me directly at my authorized email address or call the church office. Meanwhile, we're investigating the breach to see if there's anything further we can do to prevent this from happening.

9:00 am Outdoor Worship

Throughout July and August + 9:00 AM

Our 9:00 am service is outdoors in our beautiful churchyard. Continuing through August, we'll celebrate Holy Communion outside in the Resurrection Garden on the south side of the main church. Use our seating, or bring your own blanket or chair. The 10:30 am service will continue indoors as usual.

Next Drop-in Newcomer Coffee

Sunday August 17 + 11:45 AM

Mother Storm has scheduled several informal newcomer coffees during the summer months. Our last one for the summer is August 17. New or new-ish to St. James? Grab a cup of coffee after the 10:30 service and drop by the Isom Room to talk to Mo. Storm about our church, its history, how to become a member and get involved. All questions welcome! Just drop in for as long as you're able.

Woodlawn Cemetery Trolley Tour

Woodlawn Cemetery Trolley Tour

Join fellow parishioners on a tour of nearby Woodlawn! Sunday, August 17 + 2:00 PM

Fun news! The Woodlawn Cemetery called Mother Storm last month to let her know they have some records that should be housed in *our* graveyard archives. Could we come and get them? "If we get a free tour of Woodlawn!" she replied. And so we've been offered a free trolley tour, hosted by Woodlawn, on August 17 at 2 pm. We can bring up to 28 people. Join us!! For updates and details on where to meet, which will be sent out closer to the date, click the button below and add your name to the list.

Graveside Service for Lawrence W. Klein

This Saturday, August 16 + 11:00 AM

This Saturday we will be holding a simple graveside service in the Resurrection Garden for parishioner Jim Dugan's stepfather, Lawrence W. Klein. The family would like us to know that any St. James parishioners who would like to attend are warmly welcome. No need to RSVP.

Last Sunday's Sermon

In last Sunday's sermon, Mo. Eliza encouraged a shift in perspective, where we might be less controlled by the things we own. From the sermon:

Jesus knows there are children to raise, bills to pay, and health to steward. What he’s asking is that we hold our possessions loosely and use them generously; to make a new beginning, a beginning that comes from within, so that by faith, we see our hearts and possessions not just as shelters, but as sanctuaries for the Holy Spirit.

Faith, after all, is not about mathematical guarantees or predictable outcomes. It’s the courage to open ourselves to new mercies, to God’s surprising abundance, even when we are unsure how tomorrow’s needs will be met. When we unclench our fists, we discover something new - the joy of living with hearts unburdened by anxiety and rooted instead in hope.

Miss Our Inquiry Meeting?

A group of us met last month to review a proposed itinerary of "The Pilgrim's Way" in England. The pilgrimage will take place June 24-July 3, 2026, and will cover some of the ancient walking paths to Canterbury Cathedral. Click the button below if you can't make the meeting but would like to receive email updates and the itinerary/pricing. Pilgrimages are a great way to get to know other parishioners and build community, well worth the trip!!
