Loss and Gain: Saying Goodbye to Mother Eliza

Reprinted from the Member Email last Tuesday

Dear Parishioners--over nearly 10 years it's been my privilege to work with some amazing staff here at St. James the Less. It's also been my privilege to see them off to other amazing callings. Knowing that we've played some small role in making these prospects possible makes me proud.

I'm writing to let you know that Mother Eliza has recently accepted a new call to be the Interim Rector of Trinity Church in New Rochelle. Trinity is a vibrant and historic parish (350 years old!), with a thriving congregation and incredibly beautiful building right in the heart of the city. This is a wonderful move for her, and I'm so happy for her and for the people of Trinity.

Eliza came to St. James 3 1/2 years ago. It had been my desire to have another priest on staff to help carry the liturgical and pastoral load, as well as oversee our church school program. Little could I have known at that time that my own life would be thrown into chaos with my daughter Naomi's illness. Mother Eliza was a godsend. Her quiet grace, composure under pressure, and dogged work ethic kept this place (and my family) supported through some hard times. Many of us have grown quite close to her, and though we'll miss her, I'm comforted in knowing she'll be right next door.

Mo. Eliza's last Sunday with us will be on February 8. We'll give thanks for her work at the service that morning and also at coffee hour following. Hope you can be there!

Optional Healing Prayer

Sunday February 1 + 9:00 & 10:30 AM

Parishioners have the option on the first Sunday of each month (both services) to receive healing prayers for themselves or a loved one after receiving Holy Communion. Prayers are said by certified lay chaplains in a quiet space (our chapel) and kept always confidential. NEW: Lay chaplains are also available to take Communion to you or to a loved one if you're unable to make it to church. We're happy to visit anyone at all, even just to lend a listening ear or say a quiet prayer together. Our chaplains are here to support our parishioners in hard times, so please call on us! Send a confidential email to: laychaplains@stjamesscarsdale.org.

Spots Almost FULL: Retreat at Holy Cross Monastery

Tuesday-Friday + June 9-12

Mother Storm will be attending a retreat at Holy Cross Episcopal Monastery in West Park, New York (about 1.5 hours from Scarsdale) this June, and would love if parishioners from St. James joined her. The retreat is titled: "Falling Upward, Spirituality in the Second Half of Life," and you can find more information about it here. Please note that, as of last Thursday, there were only a few spots left. Please contact the monastery right away if you're interested!

The retreat is based on a book by the same title by Richard Rohr, and we will read the book together before going on retreat. If you are interested in signing up, let us know at the link below, and then proceed straight to the Holy Cross website (linked above) and register to secure a spot.
