Optional Healing Prayer

Sunday June 7 + 9 & 10:30 AM Services

Parishioners have the option on the first Sunday of each month (both services) to receive healing prayers for themselves or a loved one after receiving Holy Communion. Prayers are said by certified lay chaplains in a quiet space (our chapel) and kept always confidential. Lay chaplains are also available to take Communion to you or to a loved one if you're unable to make it to church. We're happy to visit anyone at all, even just to lend a listening ear or say a quiet prayer together. Our chaplains are here to support our parishioners in hard times, so please call on us! Send a confidential email to: laychaplains@stjamesscarsdale.org.

Annual Spring Appeal

Annual Spring Appeal

Wow - We Have 149 Pledging Families! Help Us Reach 150!!

Our Annual Spring Appeal is wrapping up! We've been hearing from members of the vestry about the importance of giving financially to our church. In the Episcopal Church, WE sustain everything we do with our financial gifts. This is partly what makes Episcopal churches so vibrant.

You can start giving any time during the year, which makes you (along with participating on Sundays) a full member of the parish.

See the link below for loads of info about giving: how much people give, what the average pledge at St. James is, what it costs per family to run our church, and more. On the budget (link through) you can use the QR code to access the pledge card to express your intention. You can also go to our website's giving page and set up a recurring gift. We'll acknowledge your gift and add your name to the list of faithful supporters of St. James!

Senior Youth Dinner & Discussion

Senior Youth Dinner & Discussion

Sunday, June 7, 2026

The Senior Youth Group is invited to join Mo. Storm at a nearby youth leader's home to talk about life, moral questions, living in a diverse community, finding common ground and the challenges that sometimes go with that. This is a safe space to talk to each other and the clergy about anything at all. To attend, contact Mo. Storm at rector@stjamesscarsdale.org and she'll send the address. The youth group and parents should have received an email reminder yesterday (Weds June 3).

Last Sunday's Sermon

In last Sunday's sermon, Mother Storm talked about the mystery of the Trinity (on the occasion of Trinity Sunday), and how many things of greatest meaning can't be explained by reason--and that's OK. Toward the end of the sermon, she also made use of another Buddhist saying, and one of her favorites. Listen for it! From the sermon:

Today is a celebration of higher truths. Some might say it’s a celebration of the absurd, in the spirit of the Catholic monk and mystic Thomas Merton who said “Suddenly there is a point where religion becomes laughable. Then you decide that you are nevertheless religious.”

You have to push past that impulse that says, This has to make sense. It doesn’t. It won’t. That’s an admission of humility. At the heart of our faith lies a doctrine that I can’t explain, you can’t explain, Augustine of Hippo, St. Thomas Aquinas, no priest and no pope can explain. Which is another way of saying, at the heart of our faith lies a mandate to humility.

Rest in Peace, Karl Panthen

Rest in Peace, Karl Panthen

Funeral Scheduled for Saturday June 13 at 2:00 PM

We received news from the family that Karl Panthen died peacefully in his sleep early this week. Please look for his obituary and a more extensive announcement in next week's member email, but mark your calendars for his funeral service on Saturday June 13 at 2:00 pm. Karl was a lifelong member of St. James, whose family goes back generations. We're grateful for his life and legacy, which we'll celebrate next Saturday. The picture above was sent to the parish when we celebrated his 90th birthday two years ago.

Rest eternal grant to him, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon him. +
