Richard Witt, who will also be our guest preacher that day at both services. Richard has been named among just a handful of individuals by the City and State of New York as both a top 100 Faith Leader and top 100 Labor Leader. He's has been at the forefront of fighting for the rights of farmworkers and and rural workers. For two decades Richard was a powerful force in gaining passage of the Farm Laborers Fair Labor Practices Act, and is well known throughout New York State and across the country for his longtime advocacy for marginalized workers and their families. Loss and Gain: Saying Goodbye to Mother ElizaIn Case You Missed It in Previous Emails Dear Parishioners--over nearly 10 years it's been my privilege to work with some amazing staff here at St. James the Less. It's also been my privilege to see them off to other amazing callings. Knowing that we've played some small role in making these prospects possible makes me proud. I'm writing to let you know that Mother Eliza has recently accepted a new call to be the Interim Rector of Trinity Church in New Rochelle. Trinity is a vibrant and historic parish (350 years old!), with a thriving congregation and incredibly beautiful building right in the heart of the city. This is a wonderful move for her, and I'm so happy for her and for the people of Trinity. Eliza came to St. James 3 1/2 years ago. It had been my desire to have another priest on staff to help carry the liturgical and pastoral load, as well as oversee our church school program. Little could I have known at that time that my own life would be thrown into chaos with my daughter Naomi's illness. Mother Eliza was a godsend. Her quiet grace, composure under pressure, and dogged work ethic kept this place (and my family) supported through some hard times. Many of us have grown quite close to her, and though we'll miss her, I'm comforted in knowing she'll be right next door. Mo. Eliza's last Sunday with us will be on February 8. We'll give thanks for her work at the service that morning and also at coffee hour following. Hope you can be there! |
