Last Sunday's Sermon

Last Sunday, Rev. Michelle preached on Psalm 121 and the words of comfort it has provided to her and so many, including the recently deceased Gospel singer Richard Smallwood, who wrote a setting to this Psalm.

From the sermon:

It is a beautiful and resonant song of praise, centering in the words and images of Psalm 121. When I think of it, I think of how the song gave me strength when I was in mourning over the sudden death of a friend. How the words and melodies wrapped around me to carry me in a time of deep grief and confusion—a time when God seemed far.

Richard Smallwood wrote that song in 1995 when he was caring both for his mother who was ill, and his terminally ill godbrother. He describes the song as “valley praise.” Unlike “Mountaintop praise” which is praising God when things are going well, “valley praise” is singing out to God from a place of difficulty and uncertainty. When we are looking up at the hill before us, unsure if or how we can climb it. Perhaps unsure even how we got here in the first place.

Interested in Being Received or Confirmed in the Episcopal Church?

When people start attending St. James, or even after many years, they often choose to become more formally affiliated with the Episcopal Church. Everyone who gives financially and attends semi-regularly is an official member, but there are further steps adults can take.

1. Confirmation. If you've been baptized but not confirmed in the Episcopal Church, you can meet with the clergy, take a short course on the tradition, and be confirmed by the bishop at his visitation (April 19).

2. Reception. If you've been confirmed in another tradition (Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Presbyterian, etc.) you can be "received" into the Episcopal Church by the bishop at his visitation. This means having your confirmation recognized and received by our tradition.

3. You can simply be welcomed in a public way during church one Sunday, with or without the bishop.

All these are great ways to show commitment to St. James and the Episcopal Church, and people often find them to be very meaningful steps. Fill out the short form below if you'd like to know more and/or move forward. You can also talk to Mo. Storm on a Sunday.
