Audrey Davies Award
Last Sunday we bestowed the Audrey Davies Award on Ocean Mills, this year's worthy recipient. Congratulations to her, and a big thank you to her family for supporting her in all the work she's done for our parish over the years. The following is from Ocean's bio published in the Sunday bulletin, which you can read in its entirety at the link below. Ocean actively participates in the Nursery School and Outreach committees, hosts the SJtL Oktoberfest fundraiser and Summer Soiree event, cooks and serves at Midnight Run, is a greeter, reader, and co-chair of the Senior Youth group. She was an active volunteer for Mardi Gras and the Christmas pageant where her daughters starred as baby Jesus, brayed as sheep, sung as paupers, and eventually played the role of Mary. She has taken over the role of bacon master from Alice Herman for Breakfast with Santa. For the last two years, Ocean has been at the helm of fundraising efforts, co-leading the Capital Campaign, which raised almost $3M for critical repairs and remediation to our St. James campus. Her work continues as a member of the Renew and Revive Committee that is overseeing the details of the parking lot renovation and much more to ensure St. James will be around to serve the parish and the broader community for years to come. Last Sunday's SermonHoly Disorder: A Sermon for the Feast of Pentecost In last Sunday's sermon, Mo. Storm preached on the peculiar Biblical event of Pentecost, and what it might teach us about embracing the erratic and unpredictable parts of our lives. From the sermon: Inviting Into our Lives, the Holy Spirit (as we do on Pentecost) is inviting in The Unpredictable, the Ecstatic, the Silly, the Passionate, Exuberant side of life that we’re told to tamp down, to keep in check. It can also be an invitation into our lives of disorder--what some Christians call “holy disorder”--the uncomfortable but occasionally necessary upending, rearranging, of our lives in order to grow spiritually. It’s true, the Holy Spirit often doesn’t operate on our terms, which tend towards stasis and safety. I know this can be hard for Episcopalians to hear, but Disorder is as holy as Order sometimes, and today we acknowledge and embrace that truth.
