Choir of St James
High School - Adults

The Choir of St James is a semi-professional ensemble that includes students in high school through adult. They sing weekly at the 10:30am service with rehearsals on Thursday evenings from 7-9, September through May. The music they sing is based largely in the Anglican choral tradition, as well as music from the African-American tradition. In addition to singing Sunday morning, the choir also leads music for special services such as Advent Lessons & Carols, Jazz Mass, Evensong, and combines with other choirs on concerts and services of Evensong. This past summer, members sang with the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) Choral Residency in Washington, D.C. All are welcome to join this ensemble that is strong in community and multiple opportunities to make great music!

Choir of St James at RSCM DC

This summer, members of the Choir of St James sang with the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) Choral Residency in Washington, DC  in July 2026. Throughout the week, 74 singers gathered from around the country including the youngest chorister age 8 through adult. Under the direction of Richard Tanner, Organist & Director of Music at St Thomas Church, NYC, the choir rehearsed 4-5 hours a day, sang daily Morning Prayer and Compline, Evensong, and Sunday morning Eucharist.

The choir rehearsed at Episcopal High School, sang services at Christ Church Alexandria, National City Christian Church, Washington National Cathedral, and Virginia Theological Seminary. Choristers also received voice lessons from Vocal Coach, Philippa Hyde. In addition, they toured our nation's capital along with visits to George Washington's home Mt Vernon, Grist Mill, and his family's church home, Pohick Episcopal Church. A wonderful musical and spiritual experience for our SJTL choristers!

See the video below for a look into this wonderdul week. Choral music included was recorded live from rehearsals, Evensongs, Compline & Sunday Eucharist. Enjoy!
