First presented in 1986 by St Mark’s Cathedral, Seattle, the service of "O" Antiphons Advent Procession with Lessons & Carols is used by churches throughout the world. Similar to a traditional “Lessons & Carols”, this service is structured around the seven medieval antiphons commonly known from the hymn “O come, O come, Emmanuel”. Each antiphon beginning with “O” highlights images of Christ - star, key, root, cornerstone. Dating to the reign of Charlemagne (771-814), the seven “Great ‘O’ Antiphons” were originally sung as a part of the daily evening prayers of the Western church in the Octave before Christmas—December 17 to 23—with one antiphon being appointed for each evening. Our service at St James the Less will be led by all of our choirs and involve members across our parish. Join us for this moving parish-wide event in this season of expectation!
