A Word from the Campaign Co-Chairs on the Why and HOW of GivingOcean Mills & Bill Haffner + April 2, 2024 Another week has passed and we are getting closer to our ultimate goal. To that point, we've spent a lot of time discussing why folks are giving to the Capital Campaign - now is the time to make critical investments in our aging infrastructure, because we want St. James to be here for the next generation the way it has been here for us and generations before us, because we like it here. Whatever your reason, it is a good one. However, we have spent little time discussing HOW to give.
Folks might think this is like the Annual Pledge wherein we give a modest amount for the year. However, we need to raise way more than we do on an annual basis. This Campaign is about being bold and thinking big. To do this, we need to give more and over a longer period. The way many families are achieving their gift is by giving over 3-5 years.
Not all families are giving the same amount, over the equivalent period, or even in the same form. The beauty of the Campaign is the flexibility of it. Some are giving weekly, others quarterly, and others annually. And while many are pledging cash, others are giving appreciated stock. The latter of which has very unique tax benefits depending on an individual's financial circumstances (definitely consult a tax advisor).
While the pledging period is over a long period, the initial commitment is needed sooner: May 5th. This is so we can estimate the amount of money we can expect to receive and in turn plan for the specific projects we can afford to complete.
As always, we are thrilled with everyone's commitment to the Campaign. It is inspiring to see our small community come together for something greater than any one of us.
Thank you, truly.

We're So Close to our Next Milestone!
Have you received a visit but have yet to pledge? We have just one month to go. You can send your pledge card to the office, put it in the plate, or ask your visitor to come pick it up. You can also pledge via the QR Code provided in the book you received at your visit. Remember, pledges come in all sizes and shapes. We're thankful for every pledge, whether it's $5000.00 or $50,000+ (and remember, gifts are typically given over a 3 to 5-year period). Schedule a visit below, and/or with the visitor who reached out to you. Look for our progress every week in this email and see the difference each and every one of us makes to this campaign. |
Campaign Frequently Asked Questions
Why am I being visited? Is that really necessary? Will I be asked to give a specific amount? Is this part of my annual pledge? How does the pledge work? We recognize that everyone’s circumstances are different. The beauty of the pledge is that it is customized to your specific ability. Some people choose to make a fixed donation each month, quarter, or annually for the entire 3-5 years, while others have given stock. Depending on your specific financial circumstances, the timing of your gift (either cash or stock) can have tax advantages. Why do I have to have a visit now? What should I expect when I am visited? Does it have to be at my home? Can I choose who visits me? |
